Can Gesso be coloured with acrylic colours?

As a base for acrylic, it is possible to mix, in any proportion, Gesso with acrylic paint.

Does Modelling paste have to be applied under the paint or can I mix the paste with the paint?

Modeling Paste should be considered as a thick Gesso. The paste can be applied as a background that provides a setoff or volume, but it can also be mixed with acrylic paint in any proportion.
